The client wanted to make better use of the unused area under their staircase, creating practical storage for coats and shoes, while still keeping full access to the fuse board and electric meter located behind the stairs.

Designed Around the Space

Every under-stairs area is different, so this was fully bespoke carpentry, measured and built to suit the exact shape and angle of the staircase.

The layout was designed to:

  • Maximise usable storage

  • Include sections for shoes and hanging coats

  • Keep everything neat and accessible

  • Allow safe, easy access to the fuse board and meter at all times

Built with Access and Safety in Mind

Because the fuse board and meter are located behind the storage, accessibility was a key part of the design. The finished units allow the doors to open fully, giving clear access when needed, something that’s often overlooked in under-stairs storage.

This means the space is not only practical but also safe and compliant.

Current Stage of the Project

This is where my part of the project was completed. The customer plans to carry out the painting and flooring themselves, which will help the storage blend in even more and fully transform the hallway.

Even at this stage, the work has already made a big difference by turning an awkward, unused space into practical, functional storage designed specifically for the home.
